How To Cook Vegetarian and Vegan

Tips, Techniques, Basic Recipes: For Anybody Who Wants To Learn Vegetarian Cooking

Learning how to cook your own vegetarian or vegan food is the cheapest, easiest, way to eating well!

Learning How To Cook Vegetarian, The Hard Way! When I went veg in the sixties, I had a hard time cooking vegetarian, because I only had the vaguest idea what to cook, or how to cook it. I compensated with enthusiasm bordering on obsession, plus major attitude. That hasn't changed - but now I actually can cook vegetarian food!

But still, there wasn't much help available for vegetarians in those days, unless you lived in California. It's still like that to some extent! I ended up eating lots of cooked cheese, brown rice, overcooked broccoli and carrots, brown lentils - and not much else.

I spent the next couple of decades learning what to eat and how to cook vegetarian, while I was a stay-at-home mom. Now, I know I was lucky to be able to do that, even though I felt hard done-by at the time.

These days, vegetarianism is becoming main-stream, it's even cool to be vegetarian or vegan, and there's a lot more information and support available. But we've heard from many different people that learning how to cook veg is still one of the biggest challenges in going vegetarian:

  • They don't know how to cook, or don't like cooking
  • There's no time or energy for cooking
  • Vegetarian foods are hard to find, or too expensive
  • They don't know any other vegetarians
  • Living with non-vegetarians makes it hard to cook veg

But many vegetarians and vegans have also said they've realized that cooking is the easiest, cheapest way to eating well.

We know that adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet is a big lifestyle change. It takes time and energy to develop new skills, and re-arrange your life.

If you're reading this, you may be cooking challenged, but you probably already know why it's worth it to go veg, and you're motivated to overcome the obstacles to a happy, healthy, vegetarian diet.

We hope the Savvy Veg articles and links will help you eat delicious vegetarian or vegan food, without spending all your time chained to the stove, or busting your budget trying to feed yourself, or hassling with the non-vegetarians in your life.

Who knows? You might even learn to love cooking!   Judith Kingsbury, Savvy Veg
